Help Refugees Factsheet

This is just my attempt to compile information relevant to those who wish to help out refugees and refugee organizations.

(Here is a list of representatives that are relevant to anti-refugee sentiment: call them to express your opinion).

If you are from absolutely anywhere, one very large, very effective, and terrifically important organization to send money to is the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR): http://www.unhcr.org/cgi-bin/texis/vtx/home They help refugees from all corners of the globe, and they coordinate international efforts, both governmental and non-governmental, to resettle, educate, clothe, shelter, and otherwise assist refugees.

If you are in Canada, you may directly help sponsor a refugee. Here is a story about a philosopher doing just that. Here is a list of current sponsorship agreement holders who you may contact to help. Here is a description of the government's plan to resettle 25,000 refugees in Canada.

If you are in the United States or Mexico and wish to help in a hands-on way, the situation is a little more complex. Here is a factsheet detailing who is eligible for resettlement in the United States, and what governmental bodies are in charge of this process (download a factsheet about the process). Most of the money that goes into helping resettlement comes from governmental organizations: the Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration (PRM) is a large international coordinator, while the Office of Refugee Resettlement, formed by Jimmy Carter in 1980, is directly in charge of coordinating efforts and distributing funding domestically specifically for the purposes of resettlement in the United States; while Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), primarily ethnic and cultural groups, are *sometimes* (read: it depends on the political climate) allocated funding for refugee aid. One way to assist is to support the US Agency for International Development (USAID), which is the primary US international aid organization. Another way is to donate to or locate and help your local International Rescue Committee (IRC) agency or your local World Relief or other local Resettlement Agency (see working list below).

More problematically, whether or not refugees are ultimately resettled depends on political agreements reached at high-level international negotiations. (Here is a list of representatives that are relevant to anti-refugee sentiment). So if things go even more politically sour, it could be the case that no Syrian refugees will eventually make it to the United States. But if they do, it could be the case that States could limit the amount of funding that goes into helping local NGOs, so for your benefit, here is a list of NGOs in different states that you might contact about helping with refugee resettlement. Organizations that I've checked out and vetted are in blue.
